Getting a photo that paints well

Get down to their level. A photo taken at your pet’s eye height reads as a portrait; one taken from standing reads as a snapshot.
Use daylight. Near a window or outside beats a flash, which flattens fur and turns eyes strange.
Sharp eyes matter most. If their eyes are crisp in the photo, the painting will feel like them.
Close enough to see their face. A pet who is small in a wide shot loses the detail that makes the portrait recognizable.

Questions

What photo of my pet works best?

A clear, well-lit photo taken roughly at your pet's eye level, close enough to see their face. Natural light near a window or outdoors beats flash. If their eyes are sharp in the photo, the painting will feel like them.

Can you do more than one pet?

Yes. Several pets in one photo work fine — just say which ones matter in the frame. Pets from separate photos are harder to combine convincingly, so a single photo of them together gives the better result.

What styles can my pet be painted in?
